Manage Notifications
These FAQs answer commonly asked TechAlert questions. For general questions or technical assistance with TechAlert, contact Texas Tech University IT Help Central at (806) 742-HELP or techalert@ttu.edu.
Getting Started
TechAlert is used to communicate urgent information during campus or regional emergencies.
Students may sign in to TechAlert once BOTH of the following are true:
- It has been 24 hours since registering for classes, AND
- The semester begins within 90 days
Once your employment begins, you are automatically enrolled in TechAlert to receive emergency notifications.
For the fastest and most reliable delivery, use the BlackBerry AtHoc mobile app.

- Download BlackBerry AtHoc from the Apple App Store or Google Play
- Open the app, enter the organization code TTU, and log in with your ttu.edu email address
- Enable notifications on your device

- Set Up Your Notifications
- Go to techalert.ttu.edu → Manage Notifications
- Add or confirm your phone number to receive text alerts
- Add family members under the Dependents tab (Optional)

- Avoid Area – Keep a safe distance
- Stay away from a specific campus location
- Examples: vehicle accident, flooding, fire, bomb threat, chemical spill
- Evacuate – Move to safety
- Exit the specified location and move to a safe area
- Examples: fire, bomb threat, chemical spill, explosion, gas leak
- Lockdown – Secure in place
- Go to a lockable room, turn off lights, close blinds, stay out of sight, silence devices, and wait for an “all clear”
- Examples: active shooter, armed individual
- If you see or hear an active threat:
- AVOID - create distance
- DENY - block entry
- DEFEND - protect yourself if necessary
- Shelter-in-place – Find safety
- Move indoors to an interior room with few or no windows
- Examples: chemical, nuclear, or biological hazard
- Go to a lower-floor interior room (bathroom or closet) and stay away from windows
- Examples: tornado warning, severe thunderstorm warning

Mobile App (BlackBerry AtHoc)
Texas Tech University uses the BlackBerry AtHoc mobile app to deliver emergency alerts quickly and reliably during critical situations.
Yes. The mobile app is the fastest and most reliable way to receive TechAlert notifications.
- Download the BlackBerry AtHoc App
- Visit the Apple App Store or Google Play Store and search for BlackBerry AtHoc
- Download and install the app on your mobile device
- Setup the App
- Open the BlackBerry AtHoc App
- You will be asked a series of questions about using your location and receiving notifications
- Choose Allow for all
- Register your email address with BlackBerry AtHoc
- Enter your ttu.edu email address, and Send
- No ttu.edu email address - use the email address you used when creating your account
- When you receive the email, select Verify Now
- Enter the organization code, TTU
- New organization settings received. Choose Allow
- Under My Profile update your contact information and Save
Please note: When you receive an alert on the mobile app, you will continue to receive notifications from the app until you open the alert and click on the "Acknowledge" button at the bottom.
For additional profile settings, see Manage Your Contact Information.
You will continue to receive notifications until you open the alert and select “Acknowledge.”
Once acknowledged, you will not receive the same alert again through other delivery methods. This helps the system deliver alerts more efficiently during emergencies.
You may choose the order in which alerts are delivered.

Voice and TTY alerts are intended for accessibility use only.
These methods typically deliver more slowly than app or text notifications. Users who do not rely on them are encouraged to select faster options.
Yes. Parents and family members can use the mobile app after being added as a dependent with an email address.

Alerts & Notifications
TechAlert is used to communicate urgent information during campus or regional emergencies.
Messages may include:
- Emergency situations affecting campus safety
- Weather delays or closures
- Other time-sensitive safety information
TechAlert messages are designed to be brief so they can be delivered quickly and clearly during emergencies.
Delivery times may vary depending on the method used (mobile app, text, phone call, or email). Some methods, such as phone calls, may take longer to deliver.

Updates will be provided through TechAlert as new information becomes available.
An “all clear” message will be sent when the situation has been resolved.
Yes. You may receive alerts through multiple methods, including:

You can also prioritize how alerts are delivered in Manage Your Contact Information.
Yes. Texas Tech automatically includes your ttu.edu email address and primary phone number (if available) to receive email and SMS text message alerts. We recommend reviewing your settings to ensure your information is up to date.

Emergency notifications are a critical safety service and will always be sent to Texas Tech email accounts. Your information is used only for campus alerts.
For the fastest and most reliable delivery, we recommend using the BlackBerry AtHoc mobile app. See Mobile App (BlackBerry AtHoc) for setup instructions.
Acknowledging an alert confirms that you have received the message.
Once acknowledged, the system will stop sending the same alert through additional methods. This helps ensure faster delivery to others during an emergency.
This may happen if:
- The alert was acknowledged through another method first
- Your contact information is missing or incorrect
- Your notification preferences are not set to receive that method

Manage Your Contact Information
- Go to techalert.ttu.edu → Manage Notifications
- Acknowledge a statement from AtHoc
- Log in with your eRaider credentials
- Open the My Profile tab
- Select Edit to update your name, phone numbers, personal email and preferred language
- Select Save
You can choose how alerts are delivered by prioritizing your notification methods.
- Go to techalert.ttu.edu → Manage Notifications
- Log in with your eRaider credentials
- Open the My Profile tab
- Select More Actions → Prioritize Personal Devices
- Drag and drop delivery methods into your preferred order
- Select Save

To receive alerts by text message only:
- Add your mobile number under Text Message in your profile
- In Prioritize Personal Devices, move Text Message to the top of your list
- Remove or lower other delivery methods as needed
Note: We recommend using the BlackBerry AtHoc mobile app along with text messages, as it is the fastest and most reliable way to receive alerts.
Parents & Family
Parents and family members can receive TechAlert notifications after being added as a dependent by their student.
Step 1: Student adds you as a dependent
- Go to techalert.ttu.edu → Manage Notifications
- Log in with eRaider credentials
- Select the Dependents tab
- Click Add and enter the parents contact information
- Select Save
Important: Entering an email as the dependent username does not send alerts to that email. To receive notifications, you must add the email address under Email Personal and a phone number under Text Message.
Step 2: Choose how you want to receive alerts
Once added, parents may receive alerts by:
- Text message
- Mobile app (BlackBerry AtHoc)

Visitors & Events
Yes. Visitors can temporarily receive TechAlert text notifications during campus events, including athletics, tours, Red Raider Orientation (RRO), and Red Raider Camp (RRC).
Athletics & Campus Events
- Text TECHALERT to 28462 or scan the QR code
- To opt out, text UNSUBSCRIBE TECHALERT to 28462
- If you don't unsubscribe on your own, you will be automatically removed after 48 hours
Red Raider Orientation & Red Raider Camp
- Text RRO to 28462 or scan the QR code
- To opt out, text UNSUBSCRIBE RRO to 28462
- You will be automatically removed after the event
Yes. For privacy reasons, your contact information is automatically removed:
- After 48 hours for athletics and other campus events
- After the event for RRO and RRC
No. This option is for temporary campus visitors only.
Parents and family members should be added as dependents in the TechAlert system to receive ongoing notifications.

Weather Alerts
Yes. You will receive a TechAlert if Texas Tech is included in a National Weather Service warning, such as a tornado warning.
Depending on your settings, alerts may be delivered by:
- Mobile app (BlackBerry AtHoc)
- Text message
- Phone call
To update your notification preferences, go to techalert.ttu.edu → Manage Notifications
TechAlert is used to announce significant changes to campus operations, including weather delays and closures, so the campus community receives timely safety information.
Decisions are typically made:
- The evening before, or
- Early in the morning
A TechAlert notification will be issued once a decision is finalized.
A reliable resource for local weather is the National Weather Service Lubbock website.
Yes. The City of Lubbock outdoor warning system will activate in certain situations, including:
- Monthly Test: Second Friday of each month between 9–10 a.m.
- Tornado Warning: Issued by the National Weather Service
- Tornado Spotted: Confirmed by trained spotters or storm chasers
- Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Winds of 90 mph or greater
Texas Tech considers multiple factors when making decisions about delays or closures, including:
- National Weather Service forecasts
- Local conditions
- ERCOT power grid conditions
The safety of the Texas Tech community is always the top priority.
The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) manages the flow of electric power to more than 26 million Texas customers, representing about 90% of the states electric load.
The City of Lubbock, including Texas Tech University, joined the ERCOT grid in 2021.
School of Veterinary Medicine
Yes. All Texas Tech University community members will receive TechAlert notifications for critical situations that may affect them, regardless of location.
At the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), alerts are delivered through multiple systems:
- TechAlert (TTU): Used for campus-wide emergencies and regional impacts
- STAT!Alert (TTUHSC): Used for emergencies and weather alerts specific to the Amarillo campuses
- SVM Email Communication: Used for class delays, cancellations, and operational updates

- Log in with your eRaider username and password
STAT!Alert (TTUHSC)
- Log in to Raiderlink with your eRaider username and password
- Select My Personal Information
- Complete the Verify Your Identity step (call or text)
- Update your phone numbers under Personal Information
- STAT!Alert (TTUHSC): Sends weather alerts and emergency notifications for the Amarillo campuses
- SVM: Communicates class delays or cancellations directly via email
Add TechAlert to Your Contacts
Download and save the TechAlert contact card (VCF file).

A VCF file (vCard) is a standard format used to store and share contact information across devices.
iPhone
- Open the email or message containing the VCF file
- Tap the VCF attachment
- Review the contact details
- Select Add to Contacts or Create New Contact, then save
If needed, ensure your device software is up to date and permissions are enabled.
Android
- Open the email or message containing the VCF file
- Tap the VCF attachment
- Review the contact details
- Select Add to Contacts or Save Contact, then Save
