Employee work expectations during campus delay, closure or early release events are determined at the department level.

• Essential Personnel: Personnel designated as essential are expected to report to work in-person on campus as directed by their supervisor.
• Non-Essential Personnel: All other employees should follow pre-established guidance from their supervisor regarding remote work.

Employees are encouraged to confirm their work expectations with their supervisor in advance.

If employees have questions during a weather delay or closure, they should contact their supervisor directly. In the event of an emergency, employees should call 911.

Faculty and instructors should follow instructions provided through TechAlert regarding whether in-person or online classes will continue, be canceled or move online.

Questions about individual work expectations beyond instructional responsibilities should be addressed with the appropriate supervisor, department chair or academic leadership.

Faculty should provide reasonable flexibility for students experiencing internet or power outages due to inclement weather.

Citibus provides on- and off-campus bus service. During a campus delay, bus service begins one hour prior to campus opening.

Tech Employee Courtesy Shuttle (TECS) service starts 30 minutes prior to campus opening.

When Texas Tech University is closed, all university events and on-campus meetings/gatherings should be canceled or postponed to a later date. The Campus Events office will send an email communication to all registered event organizers hosting events with further guidance.

The status of on-campus athletics events will be determined by university officials in coordination with the Big 12 Conference and/or the NCAA.

During winter weather, crews prioritize snow and ice remediation to maintain access to campus and university buildings. Priority areas include designated campus roadways and ADA-accessible building entrances.

Essential First Priority:

• Texas Tech Parkway – from Erskine St. south to 19th St.
• Health Sciences Center – all main roads and paths leading to emergency and patient care facilities
• Texas Tech Police Department
• 9th St. bridge – from Indiana Ave. to Flint Ave.

Main Campus Arterial Roads:

• All main entries from 19th St. and University Ave. – Glenna Goodacre Blvd., Broadway St., Boston Ave., Flint Ave., Indiana Ave.
• Flint Ave. North to Drive of Champions, South to Red Raider Blvd., Akron Ave. around to 18th St., all the way to Indiana Ave.
• Connections to all major food services and trash – SUB, Wiggins, Stangel/Murdough, Cash, etc.
• Bus routes and turnouts
• Main St., Memorial Circle, 7th St., Boston Ave., Canton Ave., Detroit Ave., Merket, Knoxville Ave.

Pathways and Building Entrances:

• All accessible (ADA) building entries and their connectors to main pathways and parking
• Marsha Sharp Freeway pedestrian bridges
• Main navigable walkways and corridors connecting residence halls to SUB, library, rec center, dining facilities, academic buildings
• Secondary entrances – stairs
• Remaining paths and walkways

Please keep the following in mind when traveling across campus during winter weather events:

• Use designated priority entrances when possible: Southern building entrances tend to thaw and dry more quickly because of sun exposure. Ice may persist longer at northern entrances, particularly during prolonged low temperatures or strong north winds.
• Use caution on all walkways: Even areas that have been cleared or treated may refreeze. Melting snow and ice, including runoff from building roofs, can refreeze on walkways as temperatures fall and may create patches of ice that are difficult to see.
• Use extra caution in parking lots: Parking lots are addressed after higher-priority roadways, building entrances and pedestrian areas. Depending on weather conditions, natural melting may occur before crews are able to address all parking areas.

Snow and ice remediation is an ongoing process during winter weather. A cleared or treated area should not be assumed to be free of ice, and pedestrians and drivers should continue to use caution throughout campus.

During winter weather, ice may accumulate on campus towers, guy wires and cables, creating a potential falling-ice hazard as temperatures change.

When icing conditions exist, access to areas near the KTTZ-TV tower may be restricted, including portions of parking lots C14, C15, C16 and R30. Barricades, signs or message boards may be placed to prevent vehicle and pedestrian access to affected areas.

Parking permit holders may also receive direct notification from Transportation & Parking. For your safety, do not enter barricaded areas and follow all posted signs and instructions. Restricted areas will reopen when conditions are determined to be safe.

In-person university meetings, events and other activities should be canceled, postponed or moved online during a campus closure. This includes in-person interviews, candidate visits and other university business scheduled to take place on campus.

Departments should plan in advance for how these activities will be handled and communicate any changes directly to participants. When circumstances allow, departments should consider rescheduling finalist or candidate visits rather than moving them online to ensure candidates receive a consistent and equitable experience.
