Texas Tech Passes Historic 45,000-Student Milestone

For the first time in school history, Texas Tech opens the fall semester with more than 45,000 students and another record number of first-time-in-college students.

As Texas Tech University opens the fall semester today (Aug. 24), it does so with record-breaking enrollment, surpassing 45,000 students for the first time in university history and welcoming its largest-ever class of students entering college for the first time.

Texas Tech’s enrollment stands at 45,812 students, an increase of more than 3,859 students from a year ago.

This marks the fifth consecutive year of enrollment growth at Texas Tech. In just two years, the university’s student body has grown by more than 12%, reflecting continued momentum in both attracting new students and retaining those already enrolled.

“We have been strategic in how we recruit students, communicate the value of a Texas Tech education, and make that education accessible,” Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec said. “Our faculty and staff provide an exceptional academic experience and a level of personal support that distinguishes Texas Tech. Students who visit our campus experience a community and culture that is difficult to replicate. Reaching 45,000 students is an important milestone, but as we grow, our priority will continue to be student success as reflected in degrees awarded and our increasing graduation rates.”

A significant driver of Texas Tech’s growth continues to be the number of students choosing the university to begin their college careers. This fall, Texas Tech welcomed more than 9,552 first-time-in-college students, setting a university record. Since 2024, that demographic’s enrollment has increased by more than 39%.

The university is also seeing continued improvement in student success. Preliminary data for the academic year just completed show Texas Tech’s four-year graduation rate at 51%, while its six-year graduation rate is almost 70%.
