The Final Ride Scholarship will help undergraduates overcome the financial barriers standing between them and graduation.
Texas Tech University is fundraising for the new Final Ride Scholarship as part of the Homecoming celebrations for ON&ON: The Campaign for Texas Tech University. The scholarship will be awarded to undergraduates in their final semester of coursework, with preference for students whose remaining financial obligation could otherwise delay or prevent graduation.
“Graduation is the goal; it’s the beginning of a career and a chance for Red Raiders to make an impact in the world,” said Byron Kennedy, vice president for advancement. “But every year, more than 1,000 Texas Tech students reach their final year and face financial challenges that could keep them from graduating. Every gift to the Final Ride Scholarship helps a student stay on track, earn their degree and take that next step.”
Fewer scholarships are available to students in their final year, yet they are more likely to have exhausted their financial resources. Some fall short of a bachelor’s degree by only a few classes. Helping these students finish also strengthens the university’s graduation and retention rates.
Donations made this October will be awarded in January to students graduating in May. Whether $25, $100 or $250, every gift helps the class of 2027 walk across the stage.
The university aims to raise $100,000 for the scholarship, enough to help up to 65 students finish their degrees in its first year. Giving is open through Oct. 18, the weekend of Homecoming. Whether near or far, alumni and friends can join the Homecoming celebrations for ON&ON by making a gift.
