Personal Financial Planning

Texas Tech’s School of Financial Planning, regarded by Wealth Management as one of the best undergraduate financial planning programs in the country, prepares students through rigorous and focused training for success in the profession. The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board registered Personal Financial Planning program combines strong academic preparation in investments, retirement, estate planning, insurance, and tax with hands-on, applied learning. With the nation’s largest full-time personal financial planning faculty, a 4,500-square-foot technology complex, community outreach and engagement opportunities, and coursework in behavioral finance and communication, students enter a helping profession marked by strong demand, entrepreneurial opportunity, and substantial earning potential.

PFP 2315 - Personal Financial Planning for Professionals

Introduction to personal financial planning, including goal setting, cash management, credit, housing, education planning, and selected professional issues.

  • Prerequisite(s): PFP majors, minors, and concentrations only; C or better in PFP 3301/PFI 3301 or PFI 2301. Prerequisite or corequisite: any 1000- or 2000-level MATH course, ECO 2301 or ECO 2302, and ENGL 2311 with a grade of C or better.

PFP 3330 - Communication and Counseling Skills for Financial Planners

A self-discovery class, with an introduction to counseling and communication techniques, as well as interviewing strategies for use in financial counseling and planning settings. Emphasizes the importance of communication processes in helping individuals and families.

Focuses on the theory and practice of investments within the context of personal financial planning, including investment vehicle, analysis and selection, portfolio design and implementation, investor risk tolerance, tax management, and regulatory issues.

PFP 4370 - Personal Financial Planning Capstone

Techniques and methods for utilizing financial planning practice standards in the development of comprehensive financial plans for clients.

Accelerated B.S. to M.S. in Personal Financial Planning

Texas Tech's Accelerated B.S. to M.S. in Personal Financial Planning lets eligible students (3.0+ GPA after 90 credits) earn graduate course credit in their senior year—completing both degrees in 5 years to save time, tuition, and debt while launching high-earning CFP® careers faster.

    Red to Black® (R2B) is Texas Tech’s financial well-being program, meeting students where they are and helping them build a plan for where they want to go through one-on-one coaching, workshops, and campus-wide events.
