Texas Tech President Joins VOICE Presidents Advisory Council

The council aims to help shape the future of collegiate esports through discussions on standards, student success and workforce development.

Texas Tech University is joining Voice of Intercollegiate Esports (VOICE) to help shape the future of collegiate esports.

As part of this collaboration, Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec will become a member of VOICE’s Presidents Advisory Council, bringing the university’s leadership and institutional momentum into national discussions on esports standards, student success and workforce development.

“Esports represents an important and fast-growing intersection of technology, creativity and competition,” Schovanec said. “Texas Tech is proud to help shape how universities prepare students for emerging careers in digital media and interactive entertainment, while continuing our tradition of innovation and excellence in student engagement.”

VOICE’s Presidents Advisory Council unites university leaders to address opportunities and challenges across collegiate esports, ranging from governance and eligibility to academic integration, competitive standards, safety and research. Texas Tech will contribute practical insights from its lab-driven, career-focused model and help strengthen collaboration across the collegiate esports ecosystem.

Texas Tech’s commitment to gaming and esports is anchored in the College of Media & Communication (COMC) and its Department of Journalism & Creative Media Industries, which have invested nearly $300,000 to create the COMC Esports & Streaming Lab — a 1,000-square-foot facility designed for competition, content production and career readiness. The lab is designed as a platform to launch the next generation of broadcasters, editors, designers, journalists, social media managers, sound engineers and streamers.

With high school esports participation rising nationwide, Texas Tech sees the lab as a strategic recruitment asset, attracting top students while integrating competitive play with vocational pathways.

“Texas Tech brings exactly the kind of leadership and hands-on learning collegiate esports needs,” said Jesse Bodony, Executive Director of VOICE. “President Schovanec and the COMC team are simultaneously building an esports center and a pipeline where students turn competition and content into careers. We’re thrilled to welcome Texas Tech to the Presidents Advisory Council as we set continue to build the next generation of collegiate esports.”
