Fall 2020 Residency: The Allen Family Virtual Visit
The Allen family was in virtual residency from November 9-13, 2020, with an added residency event for the Honors College Friday Lunch Discussion on October 16th.
Internationally acclaimed artists whose careers span almost a half-century, Terry and Jo Harvey Allen are best known for their individual and collaborative, curiosity-driven, transdisciplinary works. Joining them will be sons Buk-ka Allen, a well-known and highly-sought-after musician, and Bale Creek Allen, a prominent visual artist and gallerist.
The Allen Family Virtual Visit featured all four family members as they work from their home studios in Santa Fe and Austin, discussing both the making of their art and their lives of making art. They also addressed issues arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Residency Sessions
With one exception, each session was a hybrid webinar consisting of an approximately 45 minute pre-recorded video discussion and presentation by the Allens, followed by a 30 minute live-stream Q&A. The exception was Session 1, which was a live-stream only.

The Allen Family Honors Luncheon Discussion

Session 2
Panel discussion: Art and Family
November 9th, 2020 • 7:30pm - 9:00pm
All four family members discuss their work, both as individuals and in collaboration with one another, as well as the impact of living and working in a family of artists. Moderated by KTTZ General Manager Paul Hunton, who is also the producer and director of Hold It On the Road, a soon-to-be-released feature-length documentary film on the Allens.
Session 3
Jo Harvey Allen: Stage and Film, A Personal History
November 10th, 2020 • 7:30pm - 9:00pm
A review of Jo Harvey's works for stage and film coupled with the actress and writer's comments on her early experiences and how her work has evolved. Topics include radio, theater, film, poetry, screenwriting, and — with regard to her process — will touch on the beginnings of various projects, their development, and the elements that she believes are essential to any work. The video is followed by a live-stream general discussion with Q&A.
Session 4
Bale Creek Allen: Working Double-Time, The Artist as Gallerist
November 11th, 2020 • 7:30pm - 9:00pm
In a presentation suitable for both artists and those interested in the business of art, we see images of Bale Creek Allen's works as an artist and views of his Austin gallery. He discusses how running a gallery and being an artist works for him, with ample time after the video for a live-stream general discussion with Q&A.
Session 5
Bukka Allen: The Importance of Community and Connection, Recording and Producing Music in the Time of COVID
November 12th, 2020 • 7:30pm - 9:00pm
For musicians, recording engineers, producers, and music teachers, Bukka Allen focuses on the pros and cons that have come with the closing of live music venues and studios across the country. He notes that, "although it feels like a spiritual and financial amputation", there have been remarkable in-novations in terms of technology, online learning, virtual recording, social me-dia platforms, and in online live music and marketing platforms. Importantly, he speaks not only about the role all of these rapidly evolving changes play in day-to-day music but also how they will most likely remain vital once COVID begins to let up. The session is followed by a general live-stream discussion with Q&A.
Session 6
Terry Allen: Stories, Pictures, and Songs
November 13th, 2020 • 7:30pm - 9:00pm
A review of Terry's transdisciplinary works with a focus on his creative process, followed by a general live-stream discussion with Q&A.
