Layers of LegacySarah Tapia carved her own path through Graduate School at Texas Tech, culminating with a hike through history at the Grand Canyon. In doing so, she helped create a new pathway for future students to follow and make their own.
Tommy Butler didnt hesitate when the Texas Panhandle was battered by tornadoes and wildfires.
A student at Texas Tech Universitys School of Veterinary Medicine, Tommy spent his whole life learning to read this land – its smells, its sounds, its particular risks. When wildfires swept across 1.2 million acres in 2024, Tommy didnt wait for instructions. He built the playbook himself, coordinating semi-trucks full of relief supplies, fielding calls from across the country and organizing efforts across the Texas Tech community. He had done it once before when his hometown was hit by a tornado the year prior.
Tommys story is about more than a crisis, though. Its about a kid from the caprock who grew up 30 miles from the nearest city, who bet on a brand-new vet school, and who found himself exactly where he was supposed to be, every single time.
