The Masked Rider, one of two mascots at Texas Tech University, was named to the Top 10 of USA Today Sports’ Reader’s Choice Awards for Best College Mascot, the media organization announced today (Aug. 26).
One of the most recognizable mascots in college athletics with its dramatic pregame entrance at all Texas Tech home football games, the Masked Rider was named the No. 4 mascot in the country in the survey, and No. 1 among Big 12 Conference mascots. It also was rated as the No. 1 live mascot.
“Being recognized by USA Today is an incredible honor for the Masked Rider Program,” said Stephanie Rhode, Spirit Program director. “This recognition confirms what Red Raiders have known since 1954: The Masked Rider is one of college athletics’ most iconic mascots. We are proud to see this Texas Tech tradition celebrated on a national stage.”
The Masked Rider has been Texas Tech’s official mascot since 1954. Each year, the Transfer of Reins ceremony celebrates the outgoing rider and welcomes the new one, who will don the signature mask and cape.
For 2026-27, Houston native Sofie Jones will serve as the 65th Masked Rider. She is part of the Honors College and Texas Tech Rodeo Team, and she is a third-generation Red Raider with more than 20 members of her family holding degrees from Texas Tech.
Nominations for the Reader’s Choice Awards were curated by a panel of USA Today sports editors before opening voting to the public.
