It sounds like this is an issue of immediacy....  How many of us have
students who think that nuclear war or terrorism is an imminent threat?
While our students can perhaps rationalize the others away as "things that
will not happen to me," Freshman English IS "happening" to them, perhaps as
they answer the survey!

And I agree with William that many of our FYC students appear to *gasp*
enjoy class, even when they willingly grouse about it with friends and
classmates!
