                        TeacherFest Registration Underway

Registration is underway for the first, wholly online conference sponsored
by the National Council of Teachers of English, TeacherFest. Conference
papers and HyperNews sessions will be available from mid-October through
the end of the month. The real-time MOO sessions for the conference will
take place Thursday, October 20th through Sunday, October 24th. You can
check the online schedule for details on the specific presenters and
session titles.

This conference focuses particularly on issues that are important to new
teachers and educational professional professionals early in their careers
-- However, there's likely to be something of interest for every English
and Language Arts Educator.

Sessions include all teaching levels, from Kindergarten through College,
and deal with a wide range of teaching concerns including conferencing,
grading, working with technology, teaching literature, classroom
management, and teacher evaluation. Presenters include Susan Ohanian
(author of _One Size Fits Few_), Louann Reid and Jeff Golub (authors of
_Reflective Activities_), Stephen Tchudi (author of _Alternatives to
Grading Student Writing_), and Carol Jago (author of _Nikki Giovanni in
the Classroom_).

Featured sessions include the following:

o Cynthia Tyson on "Choosing Multicultural Children's Literature
   in a Politically Correct World"
o Nick Carbone on "Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights"
o Jane Brocious on "Why Young Adult Literature Should Be Part
of the English Language Arts Classroom"
o Bruce Horner on "Making Sense of Basic Writing"
o Constance Weaver on "Grammar: How Are They Going to Learn It?"
o Vivian Vasquez on "Putting a Critical Edge on Kids' Talk about Books"
o Eileen Schell on "Surviving as an Adjunct or Part-Timer"
and
o Kathleen Yancey on "How a Folder Becomes a Portfolio"

Online training and tutorials for first-time online conference attendees
will be available at the conference site in the week prior to the
conference, to ensure teachers have the computer skills they need to
participate.

TeacherFest is FREE to everyone, with presentations and discussions
available to anyone who can use e-mail and visit a Web page. Conference
attendees need not be members of NCTE in order to attend, but everyone
should complete the conference registration form.

To find more information about the specific sessions for the conference or
to register, visit the TeacherFest web site at
http://www.ncte.org/teacherfest/. All registration is handled through an
online registration form available at the conference web site. Sign up
for specific sessions is not necessary.
