I also teach a ssophomore-level course orignially designed for
elementary ed majors "English Grammar and Usage."  We use the Kolln
text.  Since most of our students will be teaching in a multicultural
setting, I also supplment the course with readings from Keith Gilyard
and Richard Rodriguez.

The school of education, however, has recently dropped this course as
a requirement for elmentary ed. majors.  Consequently, most graduates
will be teaching without the most basic knowledge of English
grammars.  The outlook for our students' ability to succeed on
standardized tests is pretty grim since few people here speak SE.
