RE: tutors in two year schools
I have directed a two-year college writing center for the past 15 years. We
hire student tutors and have been very pleased with the results. We post for
students who have completed our freshmen comp program (Comp. 121 and 122),
ask for instructor recommendations, visit comp. classes, conduct interviews
and give a short exam to applicants. We then provide a comprehensive
training program which is CRLA accredited. In 1991, I wrote a study of tutor
programs in community colleges; it is published in ERIC(ED332777) and
another article Employing Undergraduate Students as Peer Tutors was
published in the Writing Lab Newsletter Vol. 10, No. 6.
