Re: WE WANT INFORMATION!
Jeff --
My school, East Tennessee State University, is roughly the same size
(about 12-13,000 students) and of the same general ilk: mid-size
regional state universities.
1. We have a "formal" WAC program, part of our General Education
Program, with students required to take so many classes in the core
and in their major which are designated "writing-intensive" (we also
have Oral Communicaiton and Technology Across-the-Curricum programs).
2. The Director of our WAC program is a faculty member who gets
released from 2 classes each semester to coordinate the program
(still, most of his work is done over the summer w/faculty
workshops, etc. and it takes up much more time than two courses ever
would). Currently, it is a member of our English Department -- he is
the only WAC coordinator we've had, and helped create and institute
the program. There is some talk of moving the coordinator's position
to another faculty member, not necessarily in the English Department,
at some point in the future, but nothing is definite.
3. As Director of the Writing and Communication Center, I work closely
with the WAC and OCI coordinators, especially in terms of
instructional support workshops and faculty development, but I have
no administrative responsibilities in either program.
Hope some of this helps! Good luck.
