English 2309-001 Description Paper
Here is the paper that is due Wensday October 14, 1998. So if you could
have it back to me before then I would appriciate it.
Mechanism Description Objectives:
1.To demonstrate the ability to write an introduction with the
following four parts:
A definition of the mechanism, preferably a formal sentence
definition, perhaps with some amplification.
A clear description of the mechanism's purpose or use.
A generalized description by means of comparison or analogy to
orient the reader who is unfamiliar with the
mechanism.
A division of the mechanism into its main parts.
2.To demonstrate the ability to organize in a logical and discernible
manner.
3.To demonstrate the ability to describe each part in detail.
4.To demonstrate the ability to write a conclusion that tells how the
mechanism works or how it is used.
5.To demonstrate accurate and specific word choices.
6.To demonstrate the ability to adapt to audience.
7.To demonstrate editing ability (conventional spelling, punctuation,
and grammar).
Process Description Objectives:
1.To demonstrate the ability to write an introduction with the

accurate and specific detail.
3.To demonstrate the ability to write a conclusion appropriate for a
process.
4.To demonstrate the ability to organize in a logical discernable
manner.
5.To demonstrate accurate and specific word choices.
6.To demonstrate the ability to adapt to audience.
7.To demonstrate editing ability (conventional spelling, punctuation,
and grammar).
I will grade your descriptions according to the following:
Clear and limiting title:
Description of the big picture as well as the individual parts or
steps;
Description of the function of each part or step;
Descriptions that allow readers to visualize the mechanism or
process;
Sufficient detail to describe without too much detail or confusing
information;
Logical choice(s);
Objectivity;
Answers to the applicable seven questions answered by a
mechanism/process description;
A document that clearly address your readers;
Grammatical correctness and fluency.
