Re: Appointments

At MIT our policy is very straightforward and well publicized. If a student
is not on time for his/her appointment, we start working with a drop-in client
immediately (telling that drop-in that if the appointment client does come in
within 10 minutes, we will have to start working with the appointment client).
If the appointment client is more than 10 minutes late without notifying us,
he/she loses the appointment and then simply becomes a drop-in client if and
when he/she shows up. Drop-ins are grateful for any help they can get, and we
don't waste a lot of time waiting for students to show up.

All people who walk through the door are asked--"Do you have an apppointment?"
and if they don't, we explain the advantages of making appointments in the
future.

Basically this system has worked well for us for many years.
