Re: she said that?!
Katie:
The problem you describe was an issue at a meeting I attended this week.
The Learning Assistance Program Director had sent around a memo describing
the relationship between her center and our writing center this way:
_Students sometimes think they need one-on-one tutoring when they are
stuck on a writing assignment, when in fact a visit to the writing center
would be more appropriate. On the other hand, staff at the writing center
can send us students when they need intensive, on-going, one-on-one
tutoring._ The meeting was useful since it gave me a chance to clarify
the nature of WC tutoring--that it is one-on-one, intensive, and sometimes
on-going throughout a semester--and the Learning Program person admitted
she had misconstrued the kind of services we offer.
I guess I expected misperceptions about the WC from faculty or students,
but I was surprised that this director of a tutoring program hadn't a clue
about WC tutoring--despite our informative mailings, brochures, etc.
Good thing I'm on her advisory board, but I wonder how many other memos
may have been sent out in previous years that misrepresent the WC work.
