RE: bilingual consultations
There is some evidence with ESL law students enrolled in legal writing and
research classes--that encouraging them not to think about or write about
their legal writing assignments in their native languages--may be
detrimental. And in fact some research indicates that ESL writers may use
the technique of thinking and writing in their natives languages to
advantage.
I would think that this might also apply in our writing centers, and
especially if cultural differences in thinking and writing patterns are
operating as well. MRM
