WC director is a faculty appointment within the English Dept, with an
administrative component. We rotate the directorship among 3 qualified
faculty, two of whom are full profs and one currently in her fourth year as
assistant prof.

Teaching load for the center is one course per semester (normal load is
four). We do not consider this release time, insisting that the wc is a
teaching site and therefore wc work is teaching.

Merrimack has 2000 undergraduates; we have about 700 appointments per
semester. Because we have a writing fellows program in which student
tutors are assigned to particular classes, our staff is high: about 30
student tutors, and two professional tutors--who work two nights per week
each.

Because of the writing fellows program, there's a good deal of de facto wac
work invovled in directing the center. Meetings with faculty who either
want or are using writing fellows, communication with administration
regarding the program--that sort of stuff is also involved.

I can't believe that you're still breathing with this work load! Hope this
helps, Kathy Cain, Merrimack College
