RE: 1 or 2 semesters of FYE?
Christine,
The University of Wyoming switched from 2 semesters to 1 when it
instituted an all-university general education program in the early 90s.
In the planning stages for the gen ed program, the talk was to try to keep
the 2 semesters at the first year in addition to some later
writing-intensive courses, but there was no way to fit it in with the other
demands. So UW now has a three-tiered writing requirement: one semester at
the first year, one semester at the sophomore/junior level, and one semester
at the junior/senior level. Students know from their first year that they
will continue to take writing courses, and several departments have created
some nice sequences for these courses.
We would love to be able to reinstitute a full year of writing at
the first year. One semester does not seem long enough at all. The idea
would be to have a full year, with two (or more!) writing-intensive courses
to follow. It's not going to happen, though.
