Re: assistant WC directors

Rob:

You are probably familiar already with the asst. WC director position at the
University of Tennessee. I thought I would reply anyway, but I waited until
I could verify some numbers.

Our asst. WC director is a fifth-yr Ph.D. student appointed for the year by
our director. The position is funded through the student's stipend and
doesn't carry a salary, per se. However, the experience and the position
obviously add to the student's vita.

The position requires nine hours per week in the center (the typical Ph.D.
student pulls ten hours), with some additional duties such as supervising
training sessions for 1st yr tutors, assisting in the evaluation of those
new tutors, occasional visits to classrooms, etc.

The UTK WC is a busy place: on a campus of roughly 19,000 undergrads and
6,000 grads, we conducted 14,000 sessions last year, and we're on pace for
the same kind of traffic this year. Our staff varies in number from year to
year and even semester to semester, sometimes, but it averages around 30
tutors.

I'd be glad to provide additional info.

Tim Edwards, Asst. WC Director
U. of Tennessee-Knoxville
