At Auburn, we have just moved from the Ohio State model back to the two
freshman composition courses.  From my point of view this is a step
backward because the students do not get any instruction in writing after
their freshman year--really--and they get no instruction in writing in
their discipline at all.  
Auburn has not writing intensive courses formally designated)  The primary
cause for this change was not the departments outside of English but the
ENglish department itself, which wanted to put money into teaching two
Great Books courses at the sophomore level.

You have indeed brought up a complex issue.  The complexity probably
varies from one university to the next, depending on the student body
make up and the mission of the university and lots of other things.  Good
