A slightly different approach to the computers vs. handwritten question:

I'm not so sure that whether the writing done on a computer is better or
worse than handwritten writing is particularly important. If the process of
writing on a computer is different from the process of writing by hand (or
a typewriter), then there are benefits to having practice writing on
computers.

No research here. Just a couple pennies.
