Re: benefits of writing with computers

There is a fairly recent research piece comparing evaluative response to
student writing in two forms, computer printed and handwritten: Donald
P. Powers, et al., J OF EDUCATIONAL MEQSUREMENT 31 (3) (1994): 220-233.
Gail Hawisher also gets into the issue in "Research and Recommendations
for Computers and Classrooms," in her and Cynthia Selfe's book, CRITICAL
PERSPECTIVES ON COMPUTERS AND COMPOSITION INSTRUCTION, Teachers College
Press (1989), pp. 44-69. I would begin with the Hawisher essay, since
it is comprehensive.

If I remember correctly, evaluators tended to be harder on the computer
printed pieces.

There's another piece in the back of my mind--if I think of it, I'll let
you know.
