Re: assistant WC directors
Hi Rob and All:
The Writing Center at the University of Washington's Tacoma Campus has an
Instructional Consultant who serves, in some ways, as an assistant
director. She is a member of the professional staff.
The position was created two years ago. It has grown from 50% time (20
hours/week) to 85% (34 hours/week), from 10 months to 11 months. I expect
the Instructional Consultant position to go to 12 months within a year.
The I.C. works with individual writers, does 80% of the Writing Center's
guest teaching gigs in courses, and offers 20% of the student staffer
training/instruction. She also designs and offers writing workshops for
undergraduates and graduate students. She and I collaborate on various
projects. Her salary is as close to mine as I could get it.
Our school has around 1500 students--the campus opened in 1990--and we're
growing fast. The Writing Center complements the instructional work of all
on-campus academic programs.
Hope this helps. Best,
Beth
