Re: slow days
Here I go again. First I just have a tendency to lurk and then I can't shut
up. The writing center at the university of so. co. is the home of our
literary magazine, The Hungry Eye. This seems to be a perfect partnership
because it gives the magazine a home base, and it means the writing center
generally has creative writers hanging out talking about writing. The
magazine staff also holds their open writing workshops in the writing center
so it really creates a writing atmosphere. We also sponsored a writing
contest last fall in conjunction with the English Dept. and had an excellent
response. Sharon Hatton-Montoya

Yes, they came for lunch with a comma. Some of the sessions got 50-75
people
(I think the comma lunch was around 25-30).
Others on the list have given you some great ideas. One other possibility
occurs to me (we haven't done this yet)--if your department has some
creative
writers on staff or if you have creative writing majors, you might draw a
bunch of poeple in by staging a reading event in the Center (with some
subtly
scattered Center publicity on the tables and a brief "ad" before the reading
for the Center might work--an informercial?). Or, you might organize a
panel
discussion among a few teachers of writing and invite all the faculty to
come
hear (or a discussion on some sexy WAC topic with your own Center
staff)--that
might get them inspired?
Good luck,
