NYT Article
The NYTimes site is not responding at the moment, so here's the draft I
sent in. They edited it, of course, but this version probably makes
more sense it you haven't seen the article I was responding to:
To the Editor:
Karen W. Arenson (Week in Review, May 31) mistakes the existence of
"peer tutors and a writing center" at Harvard as evidence of that
institution's attempts to remediate underprepared students. Like most
writing centers at colleges and universities across the country,
Harvard's center offers its services--conversation and guidance aimed at
the improvement of writing and the development of writers--to students
of all ability levels. In doing so, Harvard replicates the conditions
under which most professional and workplace writing is
produced--feedback from peers and editors during the process of drafting
and revision.
Writing centers often help good writers make their work even better.
Indeed, when I worked at the Harvard Writing Center in the early
eighties as an instructor, it was my job to develop workshops and
tutorials for some of the college's best writers--honors students
working on their senior theses.
