old centaurs?

Dear Friends,

Thanks to all of you who have taken note of my Dean's decision to
reorganize peer consulting services at Rollins and remove me from the
Writing Center. We (the Rollins faculty) understand that a number of
changes are in the offing, though nothing is concrete as yet. In
response to a number of very kind inquiries, let me report that as a
full-time Professor of English and Writing next year, I'm planning on
using more time for writing, swimming, reading, and living. I'll also
be preparing for my spring sabbatical in Africa, where I'll work on WAC
and peer tutoring at University of the Western Cape and University of
Namibia. Then I'll visit the animals and do more travel writing. (In
the fall a team of 5 peer consultants who have enrolled in Advanced
Writing Consultancy will help me email students and faculty, devise my
research project, decide on materials to take to Africa for workshops,
etc. I'd love to receive input, suggestions, or contacts from anyone
interested!)
But the Dean's decision locally does not affect my commitment or
interest nationally. Like Kathleen, I intend to stay active in this
vital part of my field, including serving as Program Chair for the
National Peer Tutoring Conference in Plattsburgh come November. (I'm
also just beginning a 2-year term as President of SEWCA, so I intend to
be around.)
I shall deeply miss the Writing Center and writers' community I have
been so enmeshed in over the past 13 years here at Rollins. I hope I
can find another avenue to help Rollins students grow as writers and
thinkers, learning to live in connectedness, to pursue the path to
mindfulness so urgent for us all. (And to be a part of such community
myself.) But I am immensely grateful for the larger Writing Center
community this listserv represents. If I can be of help to other
Writing Centers in process, please feel free to call upon me.
