Re: accreditation/assessment/certification(?) -Reply

In response to those of you who have mentioned CRLA tutor
certification, the most recent address I have (which is as
recent as October 1997) is Gladys Shaw, U.T. El Paso,
Tutoring and Learning Center, 300 Library, El Paso, TX
79968.

In our center, we have 3 levels of certification for the
Writing Center. I wrote Level III and had it approved last
summer. I've told the tutors that it is their "graduate
level" training. Each tutor is required to pick an original
research project which we can use to enhance tutor training.
The projects that tutors have picked for themselves have
been much more involved than I anticipated, but extremely
valuable to the lab. One tutor volunteered to help us
create an OWL. She spent hundreds of hours researching
different aspects of on-line tutoring and drafted a proposal
which went to all the deans on campus. A committee of
faculty and staff members was formed to complete the
project. Now this tutor is involved in training the other
tutors in methods of on-line tutoring. Another tutor is
working on an extensive project to track students' progress
after a semester of weekly one-on-one tutoring. I share
this with you because I have been impressed with the
motivation of my tutors, and also because I wanted to
illustrate the amount of flexibility and creativity possible
within the parameters set by CRLA.
