At Essex, directing the Writing Program includes directing the Writing
Center: one might say that the WC is part of the Writing Program. The
position does entail a decent amount of responsibility, but not as much as
you might think: Like most community colleges, the WC is staffed by
faculty tutors who require some training but not much supervision.
The relationship between the program and center is close: most of our
clients (roughly 70%)come from courses in comp. However, I started
bringing in faculty from other disciplines to tutor two years ago, and the
Center has a long history of drawing a small number of students from
courses in non-English disciplines. I hope that whoever takes over will
continue to broaden the tutor and client base.
