I, too, must maintain computer usage records in our Writing Center.  My
plan, if I can find the funding, is to purchase a card scanner in which
each user will swipe his or her card upon entering and exiting our lab.  I
have the address of a cardreader manufacturers but I have not yet contacted
them.  (A student provided me with this address from a scanner in an
athletic department.)

My understanding is that the card information is recorded in a software
program supplied by the manufacturer of the scanner.  This may not be the
solution you seek but it seems to be the most efficient solution I have
seen.  Obviously, this method would not provide you with information
concerning the course for which the student is doing the work.

I will be interested to learn of alternative solutions.
