Re: Too and commas

An interesting take on the "comma for pauses" idea:
I got a call on my grammar hotline regarding a school board member's
insistance that school children not pause in the pledge to the flag
before and after the phrase "under God." He claims that because there
are no commas, students are WRONG to pause. I answered that people
pause because they are reciting and it's only natural to chunk phrases
in that circumstance. I also pointed out the history of the phrase--that
it was added to the pledge in 1954, so some people have to pause to make
sure they include it--not school children, of course, but maybe they
learned it from someone who does. Anyway, the newspaper article
spelled my name correctly and gave UM's writing center some free ad-
vertisement.
