Re: Paying for tutors
Hi, Phil! Although we haven't exactly tried this ourselves, the most
intriguing idea for outside funding I've heard of is to invite a grant
from the major employer in your area. You'd have to have your development
people at the college handle most of this, I'm sure. But the advantages
for the employer are that 1) the company would be helping to better
prepare its own future workforce, 2) the grant would be great publicity
(contributing to the community), and 3) the visibility of the company
on-campus would be a recruitment tool. Heck, you could even stick their
name on the writing center if they come through with enough of the
operating budget. Although I'm generally (and passionately) against the
commercialization (or Whittle-ization) of education, sometimes a writing
center has to prove its value *before* the institution funds it. This
could be one way to do that.
