Re: pencils as advertisement
Bobbie Silk created fantastic bookmarks when she joined me here at Clarke.
She's an artist in addition to all her other fine qualities. We decided
that in addition to how terrific those were, though, that we'd get more
mileage out of them if we were really proactive about placing them all
over. I think the best thing we hit upon was to ask the Bookstore manager
to stick the bookmarks into every text students bought at the beginning of
the term. We had students wandering into the Writing Lab with a bookmark
in hand saying, "is this the place where you help with writing?" We also
have them included in the folders first-year students receive upon
arriving and in Admissions.

This past summer, one of the tutors printed a heap of small sticky labels with "The Writing Center" and our location and phone number. So we've just been sticking these on anything that can possibly walk out of the WC. And pens and pencils walk out of here all the time.
