Re: Plagiarism/Lists

Karl mentions one of the factors that makes plagiarism a much more complex
issue--and, therefore, totally fascinating--that many English teachers
realize. The definition is affected by both cultures and disciplinary
demands and values. It is important, therefore, for all instructors to
visit with students about the need for academic integrity. If they can
learn to recognize the positive, they are less likely to fall into the
negative.

Another issue: faculty of all disciplines are not immediately aware of
the connection between their assignment design strategies and control of
plagiarism. There are the obvious matters: an assignment that has an
entire dorm filing cabinet devoted to it. But in the name of
"creativity," teachers will assign open ended assignments that invite
downloading from the Internet.

For those on wcenter who are not faculty consultants but who recognize the
problem with assignment design, we have material on our web site about
combatting plagiarism. The URL is below; go the Alpha Index for a path to
the info.
