laptop question

In addition to my work in the Writing Lab, I serve on our Technology
Committee.  We are investigating the tendency among colleges and
universities to answer growing needs for computing technologies by
requiring that incoming students have laptops.  To further our information
gathering about this, I would very much appreciate hearing from any of you
who are in colleges/universities which have made this move or are
considering it regarding especially the following concerns:

1.  What goals did you hope to accomplish, i.e. why did you make this
new requirement?

2.  What obstacles or issues did you run into along the way?

3.  How satisfied/dissatisfied are you with the results?

4.  Overall, would you advise another college/university to make a similar
requirement?  Why/not?
