Re: Tutors are valuable!

I was going to answer Deirdre Paulson's message off-list, but thought
maybe it wouldn't hurt to mention again the College Reading and Learning
Association (CRLA) which certifies tutor training programs in a variety
of situations. The programs (in our case, our Writing Lab and Math Lab)
provide documentation of the kinds of tutor training provided (such as
the credit course, the topics covered in staff meetings, the way tutors
are observed or mentored, etc), and then CRLA certifies us -- we are
then eligible to grant certificates to our tutors who complete the
training hours for different "levels" -- basically for each level it's
10 hours of training and 20 hours of supervised tutoring. I know lots
of the WC folks use this program -- the tutors like it because it's a
nice line on their vitae and WC directors like it because it recognizes
what we would do anyway -- the paperwork to document our practice is
really not that burdensome -- and makes a nice pr line on our brochures,
etc. I think the person to contact is still Dr. Karan Hancock, CRLA
International Tutor Certification Program, 8102 Harvest Circle,
Anchorage, AK 99502, for an information packet. There's a modest fee --
$25 it was -- and the certification (after the first couple of years)
goes for 5 years (and our last process with them was three years ago).
That's about all I can think of at this point -- other people on the
list may have more current information.
