Re: Statistical Studies

Sonja,

I was shocked to learn from our ID center that the administrative costs for
an electonic scanning system are as follows:

1) Annual *Express Card* user fee-- $1800 (At our university students may
make deposits to their bursar accounts which are deducted through the
*Express* system available in food services, bookstores, laundry services,
etc.)

2) Initial cost of scanner-- $1000 (provided by the ID service)

3) Yearly maintenance fee-- 20% (a charge for maintaining the equipment
and the database)

4) Administrative cost per year-- $1200 (for preparation of statistical
studies--the only information available is the student's classification)

The fees for this service are apparently designed to take advantage of
profitable auxilary services rather than non-profit departments. This is
why I am looking into the possibility of purchasing our own scanner and
setting up our own database so we can more accurately study our user
population. Surely a more economical scanner is available.

BTW...does any writing center return a profit? :-)
