tutor listserv

Charlotte and Kathleen,

Greetings! I recently saw the questions about a listserv for peer tutors
that you both posted on wcenter, and I was wondering if either of you had
any luck digging up some info on such a list.

I'm afraid that I don't have much to help you out--but if you do get any
feedback, would you be able to zap me your findings? In our center here at
Colby College (Waterville, ME) none of the tutors are too motivated to wade
through the (mostly administrative, etc.) wcenter messages.

What I HAVE had some luck doing is creating out own listserv. While I'm
not sure how it works at all universities, it was quite easy for us to set
up an account with computer services that links all our tutors, and other
interested subscribers, together. Also, there are a lot of options on
these lists (like designating it as open, where anyone can subscribe, or
closed, when the subscribers must first get permission from the list
owner). So you see how you can modify the lists to cater to only your
center, an entire campus, or multiple schools.

I'm still in the process of getting our listserv running, but I'd be happy
to give you as much info as I can regarding lists, or give you the address
to this one so that you can see what it's like. Who knows? Maybe we'll
start something on a regional/national scale--certainly seems like there's
a need for it.

Best,

Matt Kuchar
