Re: RE: Adjuncts!! and Dir of Composition position in FL

Tom, you won't get any argument from me about the overuse of adjuncts in higher education today. I'm especially embarrassed by Florida's pathetic state-mandated salary for adjuncts, not to mention the minuscule gta stipend. My husband teaches as an adjunct for a different dept. (supposedly part-time, though he has 4 courses), so this issue hits pretty close to home for me.

But as one of 6 new tenure-earning faculty hired last spring, joining a dept that hired 4 tenure-earning the year before that and 3 the year before that, and is expected to hire between 3-5 more over the next few years, I think things could be worse here.

"Responsibilities include selection and training of adjunct faculty (45)
and graduate teaching assistants (25)"

It's always thrilling to see a job listed anywhere, but it kinda dims
the joyous lights when the above is listed as the first responsibility.
No problem. If I don't get the tenure track job, there's always adjunct
work (teach twice as many classes for a sixth of the pay). The website
lists 31 full-time faculty. Why have so many grad TAs? 'Cause we need
adjuncts.

No offense intended toward UCF. It's that way here and everywhere.
It's so true all over the place that I feel a little silly complaining
about it, but perhaps if it gets pointed out over and over again. . .
