Re: the 'logic' of training tutors thru' EN
Virginia, I didn't mean to steal the number from Larry Nichols, but
our tutor training course for undergrads is also English 390. That
number was chosen by the English Dept. because they see it as a
complement to English 391, a course for English Ed majors in teaching
writing. In my credit-bearing course, we too read/discuss/hash out
issues raised in the literature of both general composition theory and
practice and writing center theory and practice. I can't think of what
other dept. where such a course would be appropriate. The School of
Education loves it when some of their majors make it into the course
as we have "experiential hours" when the tutors-to-be observe and
"experience" tutoring. Having experiential hours on a transcript is
very helpful for future teachers.
Also, for our grad staff, I teach English 502W, the mentoring course
for new grad staff in the Writing Lab.

Purdue. We have a grad program in Rhetoric and Composition, so courses
in writing, writing theory, etc. at both the undergrad and grad level
are particularly appropriate here.
