Exactly.  The situation you describe is exactly why I have spoken so often
about accreditation.  We should establish our own standards and our own
accountability.  And doing so will strengthen not only our ability to
serve students, it will also contribute to the well-being of our
institutions, just as you note, by demonstrating quality and by giving
others an idea of how to proceed.
