You might find support for portfolios in the accreditation organizations for
specific departments. For instance, the accounting and sociology departments
here are using portfolios with the full encouragement of their accreditation
agencies, and the School of Business is moving in that direction too.
Accounting and Sociology have both decided upon papers that will be assigned in
specific courses and the criteria they will use to grade them; all of these
papers -- in revised versions -- go in the portfolios, and portfolios are
assessed by a committee in the department. They're really happy with how well
it's working to improve writing and critical thinking.
