Scott,

Here at Washington State University we have a rising junior assessment that
is a portfolio.  So far, since its implementation in 1992, the assessment
has been very successful.  Students are beginning to take their writing
more seriously; students learn a lot having to select the pieces they will
submit for their portfolio; professors are part of the process.  WSU has a
student body of 17,000 so this is no small feat.
