Jeff,

You might consider looking at Suetonius' neat little work _De grammaticis et 
rhetoribus_ (On Grammarians and Rhetoricians). It's filled with anecdotes 
about the peculiar habits and sometimes the curious deaths of those who 
educated the famous statesmen and poets of Rome. It's a hoot.

Look for a new critical edition/translation of the work by Bob Kaster of the 
Univ. of Chicago, although I believe he has joined the Princeton classics 
dept.
