I have the choice of tutoring or not; I also set my number of hours.
The reason for this is that the remuneration for the positon of
Writing Center director as well as faculty tutors went from a course
release to a stipend when the institution was experiencing financial
problems. For five hours of writing center tutoring per week, a
faculty member received a course release for that semester. Since
that time, my faculty tutors have been receiving an hourly rate. If
I choose to tutor in addition to my administrative duties, I receive
the hourly rate in addition to my stipend.
I wish I could tell you the percentage of my responsibility. I
currently teach four courses per semester, direct the writing center,
direct the writing across the curriculum programs, coordinate two
general education courses (College Writing I and II and Ancient and
Medieval Worlds); plus a host of other committees, advising, etc.
Such is the life here at FPC, where we have 6 full time English
faculty, only two of which teach in the composition program. But I'm
not complaining. The stipend is up for renegotiation (and course
release return might occur), the center is well-respected across
campus and well-funded. I don't have to fight with our
administration for our right and need to exist. They believe in us.
Anyway, this is more personal information than you need. Cheers.
