MBU and WCENTER -Reply

Lady,

Amen. The sort of giving spirit I've witnessed with you and the other members of the list (and those who have supported it--yea, Fred!) have earned you all hero-status in my book.

Intellectual acuity alone isn't enough for that particular standing.

Group,

Some of you may have noticed the message concerning the demise of
MBU--the list Fred Kemp established in 1989 (I believe that's the
date) for people interested in computers and writing. Fred is my
colleague here at Texas Tech and through him I became involved in
teaching in a networked computer classroom, etc., etc. Sometimes
I marvel how fortunate I have been to have significant people in
my life at the right time. Fred Kemp is such a person and 1989
was the right place.

Shortly after I joined MBU I began to think about how a list
devoted to writing center theory and practice could benefit those
of us who work in writing centers. Fred graciously set up the
list for us and because I was a part-time lecturer and "not
real," according to some of the computer people, he managed the
list until we finally convinced the computer people that it would
be ok for me to be listowner/manager. I still rely heavily on
Fred for all sorts of advice.

Fred also set up the model for the discussion list participation.
I have refused to be a moderator. I believe, like Fred, that a
list lives or dies according to the wishes of the listmembers. I
think that as long as this place serves the needs of writing
center folks, experienced and novice, it will live.

I do encourage all of us to be courteous to one another. If I
were to establish a rule, I suppose that would be it. Otherwise,
have fun and help one another.

Thank you, Fred, for MBU and for WCENTER.
