Re: tutor absenteeism

I've been following this thread with interest since it brings out some
interesting labor issues with tutors: 1) is it ethical/legal to
require any sick worker to "cover their time," thus requiring them to,
in their illness, try to find someone; and 2) is it ethical/legal to
say that if someone is sick, they must be subjected to the suspicions
that they are not really ill?

Granted people do lie about illness and emergencies (being a
teacher I've heard some good ones), but is it our place to verify if
what we are told is true or not, especially when it deals with
illness? I do know (from experience with a disabled colleague) that
such "suspicions" can quickly turn into harrassment--and lawsuits.
I'm mentioning this because I sense that a boss vs. worker
(i.e. worker will do anything to get out of work) may be showing its
 ugly head here.
