Observing tutors: in our Tutor Practicum class last semester, we also
did it a sneaky way--we were asked to bring our own papers that we wrote
for other classes in and "get tutored." Some people didn't tell a tutor
that they were carefully "observing" the way he or she handled them.
Overall, it was an interesting experiment. It also gave me personally
a sense of how a tutor will approach someone from an upper-devision
course, since the paper I had written was for one. It seems like the
session in this case will resemble peer critiquing that goes on in class--
because both the tutor and the tutee are at approximately the same level...
Often happens to me as a tutor too--students come in who are taking courses
I've never taken, and I'm not sure whether to admit this to them and break
the image of the 'almighty, alknowing one' or to simply deal with the
situation the best I can.
