Summer Reading

I really loved Jane Hamilton's two novels, _The Book of Ruth_ and _A Map
of the World_. Don't read these books if you 're sad or depressed, but
read them for Hamilton's beautiful style, her compelling
characterizations, and her edge-of-your-seat plots. These are wonderful
books, but definitely not escapist fiction.

Thanks to the person on this list who recommended _Snow Falling on
Cedars_ last year. If you haven't read it yet, do.

I'm about half finished with Lawrence Levine's _The Opening of the
American Mind_, a book that looks carefully at the history of higher
education and defends, very well, our movement towards multiculturalism in
our curriculum.
